The Launching of Association of WAMA Women Groups in Mbagala Ward, Dar es Salaam, April 09 2014

The First Lady and WAMA Chairperson, H.E. Mama Salma Kikwete has today launched the Association of WAMA Women Group in Mbagala Ward known as UWAMBA. This is one of the activities under the Department of Women Economic Empowerment of WAMA Foundation.  One of the department key objectives is to increase access to technical and capacity building among women and girls necessary for utilizing available economic opportunities.

Speaking during the launching Mama Kikwete emphasized on the importance of Women Economic Groups which at WAMA Foundation have been operating since 2011 using the Village Savings and Loans Association (VSLAs) Model.  She said that the Village Savings Associations have great impact for the development since it enables the group members to have the financial savings practice as well as enable them to access loans for their business operations.

Mama Kikwete also highlighted some activities of Women Economic Department which include Mwanamke Mwezeshe Project using the Village Savings and Loans Association Model    operating in Lindi Region with the support of Financial and Deepening Trust Fund (FSDT) which aimed at reaching 60,000 people. The project is expected to make savings of 1.5/- billion and providing the access of loans to the groups of around 1.6/- billion.

WAMA donated four (4) sewing machines and one (1) computer desktop to support the activities of the Association.
